Zodiac (2007)

Director: David Fincher

Starring: Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Edwards, Robert Downey Jr

More info: IMDB

Tagline: There's more than one way to lose your life to a killer

Plot: Robert Graysmith is a cartoonist who works for the San Francisco Chronicle. His quirky ways irritate Paul Avery, a reporter whose drinking gets in the way of doing his job. The two become friends thanks to a shared interest: the Zodiac killer. Graysmith steadily becomes obsessed with the case, as Avery's life spirals into drunken oblivion. Graysmith's amateur sleuthing puts him onto the path of David Toschi, a police inspector who has thus far failed to catch his man; Sherwood Morrill, a handwriting expert; Linda del Buono, a convict who knew one of the Zodiac's victims; and others. Graysmith's job, his wife and his children all become unimportant next to the one thing that really matters: catching the Zodiac.

My rating: 9/10

Will I watch it again? Yes!

Excellent film. I made it a point to catch this in the theater and it blew me away. I recently bought the Blu-ray director's cut and it's even better. I really like the police procedural aspect of it. The bits we get of the killer and his victims are cold and harrowing. Great performances and a surprising ending. While I had heard of the Zodiac killer growing up in the 70s, I was unaware of the outcome so I didn't know what to expect. Even if you do know, and haven't see the film, you will be surprised as well. ZODIAC is a very serious film about one of America's most elusive serial killers and it's a damn shame that this $65 million pic only took $33 million domestically and that it was spanked by WILD HOGS. Revolting. And what's worse is that it didn't receive a single Academy Award nomination - this for one of the absolute best films of 2007.

There are a ton of extras on the Blu-ray that are highly engrossing and last longer than the film. This disc and film come highly recommended. If you haven't seen it, don't pass this one up.
