Polk County Pot Plane (1977)

Director: Jim West

Starring: Don & Bobby Watson, Paul Benefield

More info: IMDB

Tagline: They were hooked on life in the fast lane.

Plot: Based on a true story, the film tells the tale of two young men who live in a rural Georgia town trying to make a living transporting pot. Caught red-handed with their latest shipment, the men are sent off to jail to face a long prison sentence. Not liking the idea of spending a large portion of their life behind bars, the two men stage a prison break and head on the run, pursued by a group of police officers intent upon their recapture.

My rating: 7/10

Will I watch it again? Hell, yeah!!!

Every once in a while I get asked why I put myself through old, low budget movies since so many are so bad. I watch movies that pique my interest in some way. I'm pretty much open to any kind of film but it's the ones that are off the beaten path, ones that don't look like much money went into them, ones where the people who made them did so because they love movies - those are the ones I'm interested in because I appreciate passion and sometimes that passion pays off with a really good film. This is one of them.

Ahhhh. Remember the 1970s when secretaries had their cans on display?

It's cheesy, yeah, but the performances feel genuine and the actors are likable. There's LOTS of car chases and action, some humor (good and bad) and a nice Southern feel to it along with some cornball music and country songs. There are tons of movies out there that have some of the same ingredients but they're lacking in one thing - fun.

These two guys are the lead actors and they are not harnessed to the copter, they're just hanging on!

PCPP (aka In Hot Pursuit) opens with a 16 minute car chase with lots of camera coverage and different angles including some helicopter shots. It looks like a low budget DUKES OF HAZZARD episode but a lot more fun, exciting and dangerous. I've heard that there are no professional stuntmen in this film which is remarkable considering the sheer number of stunts and how dangerous they are. This is not your typical low budget film - there's some real talent behind the camera (and in front of with the stuntmen).

Halfway into the film there's a huge chase with the boys in an 18 wheeler full of weed. The cops are on these guys like flies on shit and my chest was thumping wondering how the hell they're going to get out of it. It's pretty fucking intense, Man!

Car chases are not the only thing this flick's about. There's a fun subplot involving the local crime boss and people get iced!

There's not an awful lot of down time between action scenes and most of it is fun and interesting so that's it's never boring. As far as I know you can only find this on one of the Mill Creek/Treeline 50 movie packs called Drive-In Movie Classics. It's 5o movies (and there are some really good titles in it) for less than $15! You can find some of these collections at Best Buy or Amazon. It's a steal. I recommend all of their 50 movie packs.
