Dying Breed (2008)

Director: Jody Dwyer

Starring: Nathan Philips, Leigh Whannell, Mirrah Foulkes, Melanie Vallejo

More info: IMDB

Tagline: Every body has different tastes

Plot: Eight years ago, Nina's (Mirrah Foulkes) sister disappeared in the Australian backcountry while searching for the mythical Tasmanian tiger. With only one clue -- a photograph of a mysterious paw print -- in hand, Nina sets out to continue her sister's work. But something else awaits Nina and her team: cannibalistic descendants of a 19th-century psycho known as "the Pieman."

My rating: 5.5/10

Will I watch it again? No, Mate!

There's one thing you can pretty much count on with the recent spate of Australian horror films and that's beautiful locations. WOW! I wish I had much more to say that's positive about DYING BREED. It's not that it's horrible, it's not, but it's not really that interesting. There's so much time spent in the beginning talking about "The Pieman" that it seemed like it could develop into something cool instead of modern day cannibals who descended from him. Yawn. Add to that that it's half the film before we're in the wilderness.

It's another kids doing stupid things flick like when Nina ventures out into the forest at night to take a picture of the elusive tiger she just saw. Right, because that's what I would do - venture out into the darkness LOOKING FOR A FUCKING TIGER! Yeah, that's the smartest thing you could do. No danger there. Her other three pals go in separate directions and one of them doesn't make it back. Surprise. It's a good looking film with a decent budget and if you like a lot of modern horror then this one will work for you as well. Despite some interesting little things it just doesn't work as a whole for me. I just need something more than typical and uninspiring.
