The Car (1977)

Director: Elliot Silverstein

Starring: James Brolin, Kathleen Lloyd, R.G. Armstrong, Kim "WITCH MOUNTAIN" Richards

More info: IMDB

Tagline: There's nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, no way to stop... THE CAR

Plot: When a mysterious, driverless black sedan begins running people down in a small Southwestern town, new sheriff Wade Parent (Brolin) must find out who -- or what -- is behind the killings. What he uncovers is a truth more terrifying than anyone expected. Is it pure evil?

My rating: 8/10

Will I watch it again? Hells, yeah!

#153 on Drive-In Delirium Volume 2 (part of the TRAILER TRASH PROJECT)

This is soooooo much better than anyone could have hoped for with a goofy plot like this. Don't be fooled. You will dig this flick. It's got suspense all over the place. And the kills? Every one is fucking cool as hell. The car itself is badass and scary looking and whoever designed the car horn needs a mantle full of accolades. I mean, shit, you start to believe the car is acting on its own. They do such a fantastic job with every aspect of the car that it doesn't take long before you accept it as a living, breathing character. It's utterly amazing. This is a genuine horror movie through and through.

You know what else I love? It's one of those movies where you get an annoying piece of shit douchebag like this guy...

and you think to yourself, "God I hate douchebags like this. I wish the car would kill his annoying prick ass."

And then it kills the guy in a most gloriously splendid manner. THAT'S the kind of horror movie you get here. It's the kind that makes all the right decisions the other horror movies of the day did not.

And the ending? Fantastic. By the time it's about to happen you don't know what the hell will destroy this thing and when they get an idea on how to stop it, something unexpected happens. Leonard Rosenman's score, based on the Dies Irae, is menacing and effective. Everyone took the subject matter seriously and that was a wise decision. It's like DUEL had a sequel and the studio demanded some kills. That's THE CAR! AHHHHH AH AH AHHHHH.
