Back to the Future Part III (1990)

Director: Robert Zemeckis

Starring: Michael J Fox & Christopher Lloyd

More info: IMDB

Tagline: They've saved the best trip for last... But this time they may have gone too far.

Plot: The conclusion of the trilogy sends Marty McFly on a rescue mission to the year 1885, where he must save Doc Brown from death at the hands of yet another member of the Tannen clan. However, there are a number of complications preventing a quick return to the future: a lack of gasoline for the time-traveling DeLorean, a band of gunslinging outlaws and a schoolmarm with affections for the smitten Doc.

My rating: 7.75/10

Will I watch it again? At some point.

Filmed back to back with part 2, part 3 is a damn site better than the last one. I'm partial to westerns so maybe that's a big part of why I like this one. Aside from that, it's just a better film. It's not dark and gloomy like 2. It's the old west and we associate the old west with bright, sunny, happy gunslingin' days. It also doesn't hurt that we're WAY back in time, a time and place no one alive knows except through books and movies.

I could have done without the barrage of throwbacks to the previous films and, even though I know there needs to be some, there doesn't have to be as many as there were. The Clint Eastwood gags were great as were the litany of great western character actors like Dub Taylor, Harry Carey Jr and Pat Buttram. It's about as good as I would have hoped for and it seemed a nice way to put a cap on the series (as opposed to part 2 that put a cap IN the series).
