Vernon, Florida (1981)

Director: Errol Morris

Composer: Claude Register

Starring: Albert Bitterling, Roscoe Collins, George Harris, Joe Payne, Howard Pettis, Claude Register, Snake Reynolds, Henry Shipes

More info: IMDb

Plot: Early Errol Morris documentary intersplices random chatter he captured on film of the genuinely eccentric residents of Vernon, Florida. A few examples? The preacher giving a sermon on the definition of the word "Therefore," and the obsessive turkey hunter who speaks reverentially of the "gobblers" he likes to track down and kill.

My rating: 7/10

Will I watch it again?  Yes.

In Errol Morris' second film he basically turns his camera on some folks living in a small Florida town and lets them talk about themselves.  Anyone who has lived in and around small rural towns like Vernon will recognize these people.  Their personalities are all over these towns.  Hell, just come to one of my family reunions and you'll meet some of them.  You might look at these people and want to make fun of them.  I get it.  I've done it but when you've grown up around people like this you have a different perspective.  They're still nutty, though.
