Tagline: Part man. Part machine. All cop. The future of law enforcement.
Plot Outline: In a dystopic & crime ridden Detroit, a terminally wounded cop returns to the force as a powerful cyborg with submerged memories haunting him.
My Rating: 8/10
Would I watch it again? Oh, yeah!
I haven't seen this since probably 1989. I remember liking it but this was off-the-charts fun from start to finish. I don't need to say much. Everyone and their kid sister have seen it.
I will say this. One of the best musical moments is completely buried under sound effects. It's in that scene where RoboCop busts into the cocaine factory. The music, if you can even hear it (I'm very familiar with it from the soundtrack) is fucking balls-out insane. Too bad Verhoeven didn't think so. Prick.
There's some great lines in this like:
Clarence Boddicker (brilliantly played by Kurtwood Smith): Bitches, leave!
[after blowing Murphy's hand off] Clarence: Well give the man a hand!
Bob Morton: What the fuck are you doing? Do you know who I am? If you think you're going to get away with this... [Clarence shoots him in the leg] Bob Morton: Goddammit! [Clarence fires three more times, shooting him in both legs] Bob Morton: Stop! I'll give you anything you want. Just please, please don't kill me, all right? [Clarence pops in a CD and the sneering face of Dick Jones appears onscreen] Dick Jones: Hello, buddy boy. Dick Jones here. I guess you're on your knees right about now. Begging for your life. Pathetic. You don't feel so cocky now do ya Bob? Bob Morton: Whatever he's paying you, I'll double it right now. Dick Jones: You know what the tragedy here is, Bob? We could have been friends. [Clarence pulls out a grenade with a pin in it] Dick Jones: But you wouldn't go through proper channels. [Bob shakes his head "no."] Dick Jones: You went over my head. [Clarence pulls out the pin with his tongue, setting the timer] Dick Jones: That hurt... But life goes on, it's an old story, the fight for love and glory, huh Bob? It helps if you think of it as a game, Bob. Every game has a winner and a loser... [Clarence confidently walks out, Bob desperately crawls toward the grenade bleeding profusely from his legs] Dick Jones: I'm cashing you out, Bob. [last thing we see is Bob failing to get a firm grip on the rolling grenade and Jones's smiling face just before the house explodes]
The Old Man: [held at gunpoint by Jones] Dick, you're *fired*! [Directive 4 limitation against Jones is cancelled] RoboCop: Thank you. [shoots Jones]
Ahahahahahahaha. Classic. Just classic. The stop motion is awesome, the score is awesome, the bad guys are awesome, and for a movie about a cop who's made into a cyborg cop, it's a hell of a lot better than it deserves to be. It's a silly premise that's wonderfully executed and you can thank Paul Verhoeven for that. "You're FIRED!". Bwahahahahahahahaha.
