Will I watch it again? Sure.

I've seen plenty of biker flicks over the past few years and this one surprised me in that it's actually good. It's different in that there's more drama than what you're used to in this genre and the bikers aren't buffoons like you see in so many flicks. Yeah, some of them carry on like a bunch of out of control teens with no filter but they're also pretty grounded, mean and hardcore. It seemed like this is closer to the real deal than other biker flicks of the era.

This is the first of five (I think) biker pictures for William "BADASS" Smith and he's really good. I'm sure that even by the mid to late 70s he was a legend in the business; at least I hope he had that kind of respect from his peers because he is a good actor. I guess I can say that I've got a man-crush on William Smith. Tall, good looking, bastard that can act. It's not fair, damn it.

The story's pretty good, too, which is surprising. I mean, there's not much to it but it's still a good idea. It was directed by Jack Starrett who starred in and directed quite a few classic fun action movies in the 70s. This was his first directorial effort and it's not too shabby. He uses the split screen to a nice effect. It seems like most people hate this technique but it can be very effective in telling a story if it's done right and Starrett did it right.

It's funny 'cause I was watching the credits and his name sounded really familiar. It turns out he was in that Jack Nicholson biker flick I watched recently called, HELLS ANGELS ON WHEELS (1967). It wasn't good but I remembered his role and his name. And last week I was on a biker flick kick so I followed this one up with ANGELS FROM HELL (1968) which starred...Jack Starrett. Nice!

Sci-Fi Trailers Volume 9 & 10

This is one of the first trailer compilation DVDs I ever bought. The quality isn't very good but the content sure is fun. It'd sure be nice to see these trailers cleaned up and presented properly. Oh, well. There are a lot of classic 50s & 60s films represented, a few I've seen over the years and all of which I'd like get to. It's just another shitload of movies to put on my ever-growing list of things to watch before I die.

My rating: 9/10

Will I watch it again? OMFG YES!

#38 on Hammer Horror (1957-1976)

That tagline is pretty fucking accurate! This is one crackerjack of a story and one of Cushing's finest moments. He is one evil, conniving son of a bitch! Damn, this guy's focused! FMBD has another knockout James Bernard Score. As always the Gothic look is superb, the costumes, pacing, sharp as glass dialogue, everything is firing on all cylinders. And the ending! WOW! It's an edge of your seat nail biter. After that last Hammer Frankenstein picture I thought they were running out of steam but this one takes the cake and it's now my favorite of the lot. It's dark, it's mean and it's great horror cinema fun from start to finish.

Switchblade Sisters (1975)

Director: Jack Hill

Lace, the ever tooth-gritting leader, befriends her but soon has doubts --it seems Lace's man, Dominic, head of the "Silver Daggers" fancies the new recruit. Lace struggles to keep control of the Debs, and a handle on Nick, as they face off against the rival gang of pushers lead by a dude named Crabs.

My rating: 7/10

Will I watch it again? Oh, yeah!

#39 on Dusk to Dawn Drive-In Trash-o-Rama Show Vol. 1 (part of the TRAILER TRASH PROJECT)

This movie is a hoot. Is it as fun as the trailer suggest? Almost and close enough to slap it on the next time the gang's over for a party. The dialogue is priceless!

"If you go, it's gonna turn out...baaaaad!"

That's Lace (Lee). I've never seen anyone deliver more lines between the teeth. She grits more than Sunday mornings at Waffle House! SS is a decently paced movie with lots of action, fighting, law-breaking, back stabbing, boob flashing, teen angst and a whole lot more. It's a blast to watch and a guaranteed fun night at the movies. Man, I miss the 70s. I would have loved to have been of age to hit shit like this at the drive-ins.

Coffy (1973)

Director: Jack Hill

Starring: Pam Grier, Booker Bradshaw, Robert DoQui, William Elliott, Allan Arbus, Sid Haig, Linda Haynes

More info: IMDb

Tagline: No one sleeps when they mess with Coffy!

Plot: Coffy is a nurse whose younger sister gets involved in drugs and is severely injured by contaminated heroin. Coffy sets out on a mission of vengeance and vigilante justice, killing drug dealers, pimps, and mobsters who cross her path.

My rating: 7/10

Will I watch it again? Chyeah!

#8 on Blaxploiteasin' (part of the TRAILER TRASH PROJECT)

COFFY is one of the better Blaxploitation flicks that I've seen and it's my favorite 70s Pam Grier role. She's a blast. The Jamaican accent she sports when she goes undercover is laughable as is Sid Haig's Russian accent and they're both guilty of dropping in and out of it every other line. It's hilarious. Say, that reminds me...camel toe alert!

There's lots of Coffy ass kicking action, nudity, pimps, pushers, stereotypes, skanky hoes with attitude, groovy soundtrack and all the smack you can eat!

My favorite scene is where the bad guys have to off a drug-pushing pimp so they drag his ass at high speed, swerving back and forth with the body slamming into the sidewalk gutter, trash cans, crates, etc. OMFG it's hilarious. It's not unlike what they did in a lot of westerns, dragging the good guy behind a horse. Classic. Speaking of classic...

Coffy's not afraid to do what it takes to get close enough to kill her mark. Cue some funky beats! Director Jack Hill is one of those guys that made low budget, entertaining 70s cinema. In that decade he directed 6 features, 4 of which starred Pam Grier and the world is a better place for it.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)

Director: Sergio Leone

Starring: Clint Eastwood, Eli Wallach, Lee Van Cleef

More info: IMDb

Tagline: They formed an alliance of hate to steal a fortune in dead man's gold

Plot: A bounty hunting scam joins two men in an uneasy alliance against a third in a race to find a fortune in gold buried in a remote cemetery.

My rating: 9.5/10

Will I watch it again? Duh?

#3 on A FISTFUL OF TRAILERS (part of the TRAILER TRASH PROJECT)

Great, great epic Spaghetti Western and almost Leone's best (barely being beat by my favorite, ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST (1968)). It's the one Spag everyone's heard of, it's Ennio Morricone's most iconic score and one of the most memorable and well-known movie themes ever, it solidified Van Cleef as one of the all-time badasses in screen history. Is it worth investing three hours of your life? Hells, yeah! It's one of the grandest westerns of all time. It's a work of art.

I have one bitch and it's got nothing to do with the film but the folks who restored it for the most recent DVD (and Blu-ray - which looks magnificent, btw) release. They fucked with the gunshot sound effects. One of the things fans of Spags love is the iconic gunshot sound effects. Someone thought it'd be a good idea to replace ALL of them with a higher sound quality modern ones that would sound better in 5.1 surround. Assholes. Fortunately they opted not to do that when restoring A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS (1964) and FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE (1965). It's a major blemish on an otherwise stellar job of restoration. I hate people sometimes.

The Gauntlet (1977)

Director: Clint Eastwood

Starring: Clint Eastwood, Sondra Locke, Pat Hingle, William Prince, Bill McKinney

More info: IMDb

Tagline: Clint Eastwood is the man in the middle of The Gauntlet

Plot: A hard but mediocre cop is assigned to escort a prostitute into custody from Las Vegas to Phoenix, so that she can testify in a mob trial. But a lot of people are literally betting that they won't make it into town alive.

My rating: 6.5/10

Will I watch it again? Yeah.

With the obscene amount of bullets thrown at Eastwood you'd think that this were a cartoon. Despite that over-the-top aspect, it's still a great deal of fun. Eastwood's the reason to watch it (or for Sondra Locke's bare chest...no, Eastwood's the reason to watch it). If you like his 70s action pictures you'll dig this one. It's ridiculous like nobody's business but it works and it's not a bad way to kill a surprisingly fast near two hours. And how about that poster art? I miss the days before brainless marketing morons stopped letting folks create a reason to see the movie based solely on the poster.
