My favorite month begins...
Halloween's the big one for me for me and this year I'm going to go all out and watch the equivalent of at least one horror film per day for the entire month. I'm 7 days into it and so far I've watched 13 movies. My goal with this blog is simply to give my thoughts on the movies I watch. Since I'm starting this 7 days into my big Horror-thon I'll go back and start at the beginning.

Plot: The Duke of Richeleau and his friend Rex discover their young charge Simon has fallen in with the powers of Darkness and is about to be baptized into the service of evil. The Duke is fortunately versed in such matters and finds himself locked in a duel with the deadly Mocata, disciple of the left-hand path.
My Rating: 7/10
Would I watch it again? No. I liked it but once is fine.
#34 on Hammer Horror (1957-1976)
Christopher Lee in all of his 9'3" glory is THE MAN. Lee is great as usual. The music score by James Bernard is outstanding as usual. Charles Gray (YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE, DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER) is great. I really dug how Satanism was taken seriously. Hell, the man himself (Satan) makes an appearance and he looks really cool. I liked it but it seemed to take too long to get to the finish line. By the time I got to it I was ready for it and accepted the little twist at the end. It's a good film that takes it's subject matter very seriously. Some of the exposition is silly and goofy. You know, like when someone explains what occult is or who Satan is to a child? Way over-simplified for my taste. You know what I felt like after it was over? You weren't even close. This film really had me wanting to watch any one of the Hammer/Christopher Lee Dracula pictures. But did I do that?
Nope. I decided to go hardcore and watch Zombi 2 (see review).

after reading about this film for years and years and then finally seeing, I have to admit I was a bit disappointed too.
ReplyDeleteLuckily the Anchor Bay 2-fer DVD was out-of-print so I made a nice profit on this.
The film was not even as memorable as Curse of the Demon from Jacques Tourneur which had similar themes.
I have CotD and I still haven't watched it. I'd better add that one to the list. Thanks.
