Mummy Dearest: A Horror Tradition Unearthed (1999)
Director: David J. Skal
Starring: Rudy Behlmer (host)
More info: IMDb
Plot: A documentary on the making of the 1932 Universal picture, THE MUMMY.
My rating: 6/10
Will I watch it again? Yeah.
I really dig documentaries on Hollywood and the making of movies, especially the old stuff like this. The docs Universal made for their Legacy Collections (The Mummy, Dracula, Frankenstein, etc) are half hour fluff pieces designed to pass the time with some interesting tidbits but without getting too involved. Most of them also include some bullshit about the (then) upcoming VAN HELSING (2004) picture (still haven't seen it and I feel pretty good about it, too). This one does not. It does have an abundance of tidbits about the lead actress, Zita Johann, by two guys who are clearly infatuated with her to the point of almost being obnoxious. They get too much screen time. I say too much because very little is spent mentioning and discussing the many sequels the original spawned. I wouldn't mind these two guys blowing smoke up Johann's dress if they had given equal time to the other films in the franchise.
